Kamala Harris has conceded defeat to Trump and vowed to work fully in a peaceful transfer of power.
Before I get into the requisite post-mortem analysis, I want to give Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim "Coach" Walz a lot of credit for standing up and running a credible campaign in a mere 100 days, after having been handed a shit-sandwich of a nomination.
In a cruel inversion of JFK's famous dictum, after a Democratic Presidential Defeat, a thousand people comes up with a thousand reasons each for why it happened, even though these are never brought forth during the campaign.
Kamala Harris did not lose this election because there wasn't a contested jungle primary to choose a candidate after Joe Biden announced his withdrawal. And no Kamala Harris did not lose because of the brutal and on-going Israel occupation of Gaza (and the West Bank). And no, hunting after moderate Republicans, and highlighting Liz Cheney as a supporter did not cost her the election (but, I will say stop inviting those fucking Republicans to Democratic events and administrations from now on damn it). And whatever other reason you can invent for why Harris supposedly is also bullshit when you look at the massive Republican victory in the House and Senate.
What happened is the old Post-WWII order of democratic western liberal society is under extreme pressure and is failing, and its' failure is being noticed by a very large percentage of Americans.
White Women Love Trump |
Trump and Vance won this election because they offered the disaffected American people, a new world order, a new populism. And that resonated with multiple groups across the country. Trump dominated amongst White and Latino Men and got the same percentage of white woman as during his other campaigns. Trump is a savvy politician and spoke to these groups.
What Trump and Vance and MAGA are offering is a Reactionary Populism which will address the failing economic power of these groups, in a way the currently aligned US Economy absolutely does not.
Harris, Biden, and a lot of Democratic strategists have been unable to understand why the economy wasn't a strong suit for Biden (and Harris). All the indicators they pay attention to show it's booming economy and Biden's post-pandemic plans helped alleviate worse economic conditions. But, the economy is only good for the Billionaires, the wealthy, and the already financially secure, it's shit for everyone else who is struggling and unable to get out of a paycheck to paycheck lifestyle. Trump and Vance spoke directly to them.
Certainly, Vance's oft mentioned plan of rounding-up and deporting 20 Million "Illegals" which will thus lead to Real Americans having a chance at a good paying job and affording a nice house is utter racist bullshit but, that's not what the white working class sees. No, instead they see one candidate addressing their struggles and coming up with innovative strategies (No taxes on tips, no taxes on Overtime, drill baby drill) and the other party which is focused on Hollywood and Show Business celebrity endorsements and caters to the college educated snobs and elitists and the well-to-do Upper Middle Class.
I think 84 year old Senator Bernie Sanders analysis is absolutely correct,
“It should come as no great surprise that a Democratic Party which has abandoned working class people would find that the working class has abandoned them,” the Vermont independent said in a statement Wednesday. “First, it was the white working class, and now it is Latino and Black workers as well. While the Democratic leadership defends the status quo, the American people are angry and want change. And they’re right.”
I think the Democratic Party needs to jettison it's alliance with big money Capital and go in a radically marxist direction of running for office. There's no much reason not to! They aren't winning by running with lite softer versions of Republican Capitalist ideas and Republicans already call every Democrat running a radical left lunatic at every opportunity. It can't get much worse than the 2024 bloodbath we just saw yesterday.
As it stands clinging to the there current election strategy is failure. 20th century liberalism and Institutions based upon the understanding are dying if they aren't dead already. Republicans Reactionary populism is now the dominant paradigm and Democrats need a response.
Now, we get to see what Trump's insane campaign promises and fascist populism will wrought on the Nation. Dealing with people at work, all gleeful gloating MAGA supporters, I adopted the stance that while I don't support Trump I nonetheless wish him great luck in helping to heal the Nation and earnestly hope his policy proposals aid in helping hard-working Americans be able to afford and enjoy the American Dream.
