Richard Sherman's raw interview with Erin Andrews after the Seahawks victory over the 49ers is one of the latest incidents that has sent the Right into an apoplectic fury.
Conservatives were angered by Sherman's display, his dreadlocks, his rawness, his thugishness. Facebook and Twitter were littered with reactions calling Sherman a "Thug" over and over again. What conservatives really hate is Sherman's penalty of Unforgivable Blackness. Because when conservatives saw Sherman standing brazenly triumphant in the face of an attractive white woman, it stirred the seething cauldron of animus right-wingers have towards African-Americans.
Of course, the same emotive display by a white athlete would have earned praise from the likes of Limbaugh and conservatives as gritty, hard-nosed and demonstrable of the tough attitude which made Football great until Jim Brown and his "Thugs" ruined everything.
The use of the word "Thug" by right-wingers is nothing more than a euphemism for the N-word. Lee Atwater taught conservatives well, they know they can no longer wear their racism openly, so they have to substitute words and phrases to conceal their bigotry. So, the N-word becomes Welfare Queen, Steak-Eatin Young Bucks, Natural Born Citizens and Thugs.
And since conservatives are wantonly lacking in education they don't know the word was adapted by the English for the slurring of Indians based on the Thugee Cult. To the British Raj of the 18th and 19th century all Indians were N-words. The word Thug entered the English Language in the 1830's when the British moved to obliterate the Cult and curtail the Thugee practice of highway robbery and murder by strangulation.
Thug has really gained momentum since the election of Barack Obama as the Right-Wing Fart Bubble Internet Media has applied the term to President Obama, Eric Holder, Shirley Sherrod, Susan Rice and everyone associated with the President and the Fake Scandals the Right has foisted upon Obama in their effort to undermine him and subject the Nation to the Rule of Ultra-Reactionaries and The Plutocracy.
Some on the right went into a self righteous fury after seeing the interview. Many on the left went with those same stupid antics. BFD. It's the NFL and just like the WWE the star performers like to talk a lot of shit.
ReplyDeleteSherman is probably the best corner in the game today. He's got license to talk some shit when he shuts down a top rated receiver. The people who shoot him down for that probably haven't poohed in a few days and they come from both sides of the aisle.
Hate me for being a conservative if you want but don't put words in my mouth. I like Denver because they beat New England but I'm still a fan of Richard Sherman. So fuck off if I don't fit into your prejudiced mold.
Ha ha ha ha ha. Oh, chicky baby just like Alice Stewart, you can't admit some conservatives are racists and hate black people,
ReplyDelete"[e]specially on MLK day of all days is look how far we’ve come, we have not only elected the first African-American President, We’ve re-elected him. And the fact of the matter is, people don’t dislike him because he’s a black President, that has nothing to do with it..."
Enjoy all those WND, Blaze, Breitbart, Powerline and Twitchy articles which sprinkle in 'Obama's Thugs' and 'Chicago-style politics' because now I've ruined those stories for you. Heh heh heh...
When I was in high school in the late 50s, a 'thug' was a white male with a black leather jacket and ducktails. Now, as you say, it's a substitute for the N-word.
ReplyDeleteI saw the clip and thought it was over the top and ridiculous, but I didn't pay much attention to it or the story, not being a fan of sports or of football (in particular). Good catch, GEG. I quite agree with your analysis. In regard to "thug" being a euphemism for the N-word... most of us the Left know this to be fact. Many on the Right will deny it... they'd never use the N-word (or a euphemism). Using the N-word is something racist Democrats do. Probably when they get together and laugh about how they've tricked Black people into voting Democrat.
ReplyDeleteHa ha ha ha ha. Oh, chicky baby just like Alice Stewart, you can't admit some conservatives are racists and hate black people,
ReplyDeleteWrong again Gene. You're painting all conservatives with the same brush. We're not all the same; some are racist. It's no different from the liberals. I know a guy who sat out the last two presidential elections because he only votes Democrat and could not bring himself to vote for a black man.
Your insistence that one side is pure good and the other side is pure bad is as stupid any other prejudice.
There is a reason for the division in this country and it's not the president but the people.
So we turn what was probably the best game of the season into a political debate? Holy sh#t!
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I will not deem Sherman the best corner in football. Definitely top five, but it's easy to be one of the best when you play with two of the best safeties in football. Sort of like the Emmitt Smith debate.
Second, sorry Hammer but you'll have to define "top rated" receiver for me, because Crabtree is not.
With that said, how come whenever there's a media incident, we have to redefine terms as we know them. This whole "thug" reminds me of the "uppity" thing. Forever, I referred to stuck up asshole women as uppity. Then all of the sudden I can't say it, because it really refers to a black woman. Well, uppity, uppity. What now? My whole life I have referred to a man who preys upon weaker or unsuspecting people as a thug. But I guess I should stop because it's a word adapted by the British to slur Indians.
You never fail to surprise me Gene. You really know how to turn a non-story into a story.
As for the post game interview. It was a shining example of a great football player who never learned, nor understood sportsmanship. Sherman's not the first, and he won't be the last. But if you go by my "thug" definition, Wes Welker is more of a thug than Sherman.
appears Sherman's no dummy, "The only reason it bothers me is because it seems like the accepted way of calling somebody the n-word nowadays." Sherman the pointed out that in a hockey game, "they didn't even play hockey. They just threw the puck aside and stated fighting."
